Blue Yonder Organic Farm
Five years ago, Sarah Creech bought a 50 acre farm located in North Salem & named it, Blueyonder Organic Farm. Sarah is a self taught farmer. She read books and used local resources to learn about organic farming. She started from scratch and over the past five years, she has converted the land and farm into a successful organic, sustainable farm. During that first year she worked a full time job to help support her new farm. She continues to work a full-time side job from home which has allowed her to do many improvements to her farm over the years.
The house needed remodeling and the land was not suitable for farming or gardening but this did not discourage Sarah from buying the farm. Two weeks before Christmas in 2012, she bought the house & moved several weeks later. With the help of her family they did a complete remodel of the house that first year. She also had to plant cover crops in the fields to make it useable for pasture for future animals. Currently she has several hundred egg laying chickens, meat chickens & ducks which are all pastured raised. Last winter she also added a couple cows to her farm and one of the cows had a baby calf. She also bought several goats and keeps them in a nearby wooded area to help clean up some of the weeds.
She also has a large garden located outdoors and a large greenhouse that is used to raise certified organic Vegetables. She grows a wide variety of greens, root veggies, cucumbers, garlic and onions in her gardens. She sells the vegetables at the local farmer’s markets on the weekends and also through the local CSA. On Friday evenings from 4-7PM she’s at the Fork to Farm at Normandy Farms and Saturday mornings she brings her produce to the Carmel’s Farmer’s market.
This summer I had the privilege of spending a day with Sarah at her Farm. On this particular morning both Sarah and her farmhand were moving 400 chickens from one pasture to another pasture which was quite a task to complete since chickens do not always listen well. They also milk Josie, her cow that had a baby calf earlier this spring. The calf stays with the mama cow during the day but in the evening they are separated so that they can milk Josie in the mornings and currently the extra milk provides butter and cheese for herself and her family.
At a young age Sarah has been through some trials herself. Her late husband passed away from colon cancer before she started this farm. Through this difficult time, she decided to continue pursuing her dream of buying a farm and living a quiet but dedicated life in the country. Sarah is a veteran herself & being outdoors around her animals & the earth has been healing for her. Being a veteran herself has led her to hire veterans to help at the farm. She also runs an internship program on her farm for veterans that want to learn firsthand how to start and successfully run an organic, sustainable farm.
Farmers like Sarah are such in inspiration and integral part of our communities by providing locally grown produce and humanly raised animals for meat. Her produce is all raised without the use of herbicides or pesticides. Her animals are all pasture raised, they’re not treated with hormones or antibiotics and are only supplemented with non-gmo feed.
I encourage everyone to support her farm and others like her by buying there produce and other farm products at the local farmer’s markets. Every Friday evening she’s at the Farm to Fork at Normandy Farmer’s market 4-7pm and Saturday’s at the Carmel’s Farmer’s market from 8-11:30AM.
