ROASTED GARLIC STEAK SAUCE

When I think of steak sauce I automatically think of A1 sauce, but we quit buying it a couple years ago because of its’ long list of preservatives that included corn syrup, potassium sorbate and carmel color. I have always wanted to make my own steak sauce, not necessarily a version of the A1 sauce just something that’s delicious that would go well with both steaks and hamburgers. I did some research and found some sauces that looked good but I figured why not make my own version? Also I wanted to make enough to be able to preserve it for several future meals. Having tasty sauces, pestos and salsas pre made helps us make delicious weeknight dinners that are quick and easy.

One of the recipes I found had roasted garlic in it which sounds utterly amazing. Therefore the base of my sauce is lots and lots of roasted garlic and my own homemade plain tomato sauce that I canned late this summer. My garlic heads were on the smaller side therefore I used two whole garlic heads. Roasting garlic changes its’ flavor to a more sweet taste and loses most of its’ spiciness, but if you think this is to much just just use one head of garlic. I used my own tomato sauce, but store bought tomato sauce is just as delicious, just be sure to buy a good quality brand such as kirkland organics from Costco or my personal favorite is from jovial. Besides the garlic, I added a few spices and applesauce for a light flavored sweetener and tada we have a delicious sauce.

ROASTED GARLIC STEAK SAUCE

Servings 2.5 Cups

Ingredients
  

  • 1-2 Garlic Heads Roasted See previous blog post for directions on how to roast garlic.
  • 3/4 Cup Raisins
  • 1.5 Cup Hot Water
  • 2 TBSP Sweet Onion
  • 1/2 Cup Balsamic Vinegar
  • 1.5 Cups Plain Tomato Sauce
  • 2 TBSP Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/4 Cup Unsweetened Applesauce
  • 1.5 TBSP Apple Butter apple jelly would work well to and it may be easier to find in the grocery store
  • 1 tsp Sea Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tsp Yellow mustard

Instructions
 

  • Soak raisins in hot water for 15 minutes. Soak diced sweet onions or shallots in balsamic vinegar for 15 minutes. Soaking the onions and raisins helps make a much smoother sauce.
  • Place the tomato sauce, worcestershire sauce, s&p, apple butter, applesauce, yellow mustard in the blender. Add the raisins and onion along with the hot water and balsamic vinegar to the blender. Blend on how high until sauce is completely blended and smooth, as seen in the picture below.
  • This recipe makes approximately 2.5 Cups. If you have leftovers you could freeze it. If you choose this preservation method, be sure to leave 1-2 inches of headspace otherwise the jar may break once your sauce freezes.
  • I did not have anymore freezer space this year therefore I preserved it by using the water bath method.
