Dairy Free Sausage Gravy

Serve With Creamy Scrambled Eggs, Fried Potatoes, Biscuits or my favorite Chicken Fried Steak!

I love sausage gravy especially served over a perfectly baked biscuit but since I’ve cut out most baked goods I have been serving it with fried potatoes and scrambled eggs. This week I had a sirloin steak in the freezer and wanted to make something new but at the same time a classic dish and I thought of chicken fried steak. Usually it’s drenched in flour and fried in unhealthy vegetable oil. I decided that that I could make some easy and healthy substitutions to make this a fun and amazing tasting weeknight meal. I used bacon grease to fry the steaks in and cassava flour instead of white flour to coat the steaks. My favorite nondairy milk for savory dishes is almond, it’s creamy and has the closest consistency to real milk. I think coconut milk would also work but I just didn’t want my gravy to have any coconut flavor.

My husband told me that this dish reminded him of some of the southern fried food that his grandmother used to make, I told him that was a lovely compliment since he’s always telling me about her delicious fried food. It’s always thrilling to me when I make a dish that I normally wouldn’t eat but figure out a way to make it that is coherent to my dietary needs. I know I’ll make this again but will probably wait till the colder fall weather rolls around since it is more of a comfort food recipe.

Sausage Gravy

Servings 2 Larg Servings

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb Plain Ground Pork
  • 3/4 tsp Seasoned Salt If you don't have seasoned salt, see my recipe in previous post
  • 1 TBSP Rubbed Sage Dried Sage will also work
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper
  • Salt To taste
  • 2 Cups Almond Milk
  • 3 TBSP Arrow Root Flour Mixed with 3 TBSP room temperature water

Instructions
 

  • Cook unthawed Ground Pork in a medium sized frying pan, cut into small pieces while it's cooking.
  • After the meat is cooked, add the almond milk and spices. Place on medium heat till hot, but not simmering. Mix arrow root flour and water and stir into the sausage gravy to thicken. Taste and add salt if needed.
  • Most people serve sausage gravy with biscuits but it's also delicious with scrambled eggs, fried potatoes and/or chicken fried steak, my favorite. Until I come up with a biscuit recipe that I can eat I will serve it with those options!
